Started in the United States, the concept of Black Friday grew out of the one day holiday that Americans took after Thanksgiving.  With time on their hands and the last pay check landing in their accounts until after Christmas many used the day to buy Christmas presents and gifts ready for the December festivities.

Retailers took advantage of the surge in shoppers by offering discounts, encouraging consumers into their stores to make their purchases on the hallowed Friday following Thanksgiving.

Since 2014 internet retailers have quietly extended “Black Friday” to become more of a season. Extending the one day to include the weekend in 2014 to what is expected to be the whole week this year.

Many large online retailers are starting their Black Friday offers from next Monday 21st November and expect to finish on Monday 28th November.  Their intention is to pick up some of the £6.5 billion that will be spent online in the UK.
